NAND Flash Technologies
Fusion-io has pioneered the novel use of persistent Flash-NAND technology to define a new performance tier they term "io-Memory". The io-Memory resides very close to program memory, yet presents itself logically as a block device. This characteristic of "fusing" memory and storage, offers extreme advantages in achieving unprecedented I/O performance, which also enables consolidation of infrastructure. While NAND technology is mature and can be found in a number of storage devices and appliances, it does present some other characteristics that need to be managed in order to gain the best performance and longest service life. Our presentation will explore the different NAND flash technologies, and how each can be leveraged to provide the best cost-performance solution. We will also explore how Fusion-io devices differ from traditional solid-state drives (SSD), where they fit, and how they can be exploited to enable commodity based platforms to perform at extreme rates that, in-turn, enable organizations to get the most utilization from, and extend the life of, their platform investment.
