WWT and our partner, Intel, have engaged in an ongoing effort to support Puerto Rico schools in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria by providing computers to many schools throughout the area. In this article from the Governor’s Office, Puerto Rico’s Governor, Ricardo Rosselló Nevares, discusses the impact of this effort as well as next steps in the initiative.

El gobernador Ricardo Rosselló Nevares visitó la Escuela Francisco Morales de Naranjito junto a ejecutivos de la compañía Intel, para hacer un donativo de equipo tecnológico de más de 1,000 computadoras a varias escuelas de la Isla.

En una segunda fase en 2019 se completará el de otras 1,000 más.

Este donativo se lleva a cabo por medio de Intel Corporation con la colaboración de la Oficina del Principal Oficial de Informática (CIO, por sus siglas en inglés) del Gobierno de Puerto Rico, dirigida por Luis Arocho González, tras una visita de Intel y World Wide Technology (WWT) en diciembre de 2017 para analizar las necesidades de la Isla tras el paso del huracán María.

“Soy consciente de que mi agradecimiento a Intel Corporation va a nombre de todo Puerto Rico, particularmente de las comunidades escolares que vieron sus instalaciones educativas destruidas tras el paso del huracán María”, sostuvo el primer ejecutivo.

Rosselló Nevares añadió que “con la ayuda de compañías como Intel, nuestros niños y jóvenes pueden presenciar el proceso de recuperación y optimización de sus escuelas. Seguimos trabajando para ofrecer al estudiantado los recursos necesarios para su educación y el desarrollo de las habilidades en ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés) para habilitar el progreso de Puerto Rico”.

La entrega de computadoras Intel Next Unit of Computing (NUC) a 25 laboratorios y seis bibliotecas en 22 municipios de Puerto Rico impactará a cerca de 15,000 estudiantes durante 2019; se estima que, al cabo de cinco años, los estudiantes beneficiados por esta iniciativa sean más de 75,000. Cabe mencionar que estos espacios no contaban anteriormente con computadoras.
