BGP Communities

Foundations Lab

Solution overview

In this lab, participants will delve into the intricacies of using BGP communities for route management, focusing on how to effectively advertise routes from a data center and enable branch offices to act upon those community values. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience on the application of BGP community attributes to control routing policies and decisions across a network. Starting with an introduction to BGP communities and their significance in route tagging and policy implementation, participants will configure a simulated network where a data center advertises routes tagged with specific community values. The next phase involves setting up branch office routers to recognize these community tags and apply predetermined routing policies based on these tags, such as preferential path selection, traffic prioritization, or route filtering. Through this practical exercise, learners will grasp the power of BGP communities in simplifying network management and achieving more granular control over route propagation and policy enforcement in a distributed network environment.
