World Wide Technology continues community outreach in support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines

ST LOUIS – December 10, 2015 – World Wide Technology, Inc. (WWT), a market leading technology integrator, today announced that it has launched an initiative to raise awareness and foster interest by high school students in the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (collectively known as STEM subjects).

"WWT is proud to play a role in encouraging high school students to consider careers in science and technology," said Mike Taylor, vice president of Information Technology with WWT. "We hope to help students realize that STEM disciplines are fun, challenging and offer the potential for a rewarding career — whether at World Wide Technology or elsewhere."

Five St. Louis-area schools are participating in the initial event: De Smet Jesuit, Cardinal Ritter, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, Metro and Parkway School District.

"The objective of the program is to improve academic proficiency and provide competitive advantages for college enrollment by increasing awareness around disciplines in STEM," said Ann Marr, vice president of Global Human Resources with WWT. "Just as important, we hope they gain exposure to WWT technology and as well as exposure to future career opportunities."

This year's program consisted of two sessions. The first was a half-day event held on WWT's campus that included presentations by senior executives as well as discussions led by volunteer employees from WWT.

Topics covered included a discussion of STEM careers, a tour of Advanced Technology Center (ATC), an opportunity to learn about WWT's internship program and a cybersecurity overview by a WWT engineer.

Also during the initial event, five teams were assigned a hands-on activity. Coached by a WWT employee, the teams will work together on a "Hackathon" event where they can showcase their knowledge, creativity and innovation by identifying and solving a problem using STEM skills. The winning school will receive a $10,000 scholarship from WWT.
