The foundation for AI: Making private AI infrastructure programmable
This video was contributed by our partner Digital Realty.
Private AI is not just a compute problem. It is a foundation problem.
Enterprises moving artificial intelligence (AI) into production need capacity they can trust, open interconnection they can control, and sovereign infrastructure they can govern. These infrastructure components should run across on-premises systems, high-density colocation, public cloud, and partner ecosystems.
The question is no longer where to run AI. It is how to design, operate, and govern the infrastructure underneath it.
Digital Realty's approach is straightforward: build the base, rent the spike (burst capacity to meet peak demand), and make the foundation programmable. ServiceFabric® Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is the first programmable surface of that foundation.
Built on Private AI Exchange (AIPx), Digital Realty's patented architecture for agentic infrastructure control, ServiceFabric MCP extends the global platform with programmable controls and agent-ready interfaces designed for Private AI.
Why private AI demands a programmable foundation
AI workloads are elastic, time-sensitive, and increasingly distributed. Performance is no longer measured only in milliseconds, but in consistency, delay variation, delivery success, and time-to-implementation. Data sovereignty, regulatory frameworks, and partner-driven architectures vary by geography and industry.
Enterprises running private AI are no longer optimizing only for cost or scale. They are optimizing for control: control over where data flows, which models can access it, how policies are enforced, and how infrastructure responds as conditions change.
The traditional human-operated model, where engineers log into consoles, export logs, and manually translate business intent into network configurations, does not scale to AI environments that change by the hour. The foundation underneath needs to become programmable, intelligible to AI systems, and governable by policy rather than by ticket.
Making the foundation programmable
ServiceFabric MCP places MCP servers in front of ServiceFabric application programming interfaces (APIs), allowing AI agents to interact directly with infrastructure through intent rather than through portals or scripts.
An architect can ask whether sufficient capacity exists to support a private AI deployment across a specific metro, spanning multiple clouds, with defined performance requirements. ServiceFabric MCP is designed to return a real-time, data-backed answer. What once took days of coordination is expected to become adaptive and conversational.
This is not a chatbot layered on top of networking. MCP enables agents to reason over live infrastructure state, policies, and constraints, then translate intent into validated actions. Humans remain in control. They are no longer the bottleneck.
Validated across Digital Realty's platform and ecosystem
This is not theoretical architecture.
- Digital Realty as Customer Zero. Digital Realty operates ServiceFabric MCP and related AI infrastructure workflows on its own global platform, using internal workloads to validate capabilities before broader customer deployment. Insights from these internal deployments directly inform the roadmap, accelerating the refinement of features most critical to enterprise Private AI environments.
- Enterprise validation. A leading global chemical manufacturer is engaged in foundation architecture use cases for regulated, multi-jurisdictional Private AI environments.
- CIO demand signal. A May 2026 Digital Realty roundtable with 15 enterprise Chief Information Officers surfaced consistent demand for programmable, sovereign-aware infrastructure for private AI.
- Partner ecosystem. Digital Realty has launched AI solutions with partners including ePlus, Lenovo, and Dell, built on infrastructure from leading chipmakers such as NVIDIA and AMD. Additional providers are in active development.
What ServiceFabric MCP delivers
Initial ServiceFabric MCP capabilities are available today, with additional private AI capabilities slated for inclusion in Digital Realty's product roadmap. Together, they form a private AI control surface across four capability areas:
- Design and provisioning: Intent-based connectivity design, provisioning, and MCP-mediated access to ServiceFabric APIs.
- Discovery and telemetry: Real-time capacity, topology, and inventory discovery, plus live fabric telemetry covering latency, loss, and utilization.
- Policy and security: Policy-aware routing, enterprise-grade identity and access control via OAuth 2, and programmable controls for network and governance policies.
- Operations integration: Agent-assisted diagnostics and guided troubleshooting, with integration hooks for Slack, Microsoft Teams, Splunk, and Datadog.
Open by design, built for sovereign AI
ServiceFabric is an open interconnection platform. Enterprises and service providers do not need to operate exclusively within Digital Realty facilities to participate. The platform supports connectivity across public clouds, network service providers, bare metal platforms, and other colocation environments, reflecting how private AI is actually deployed.
Open does not mean uncontrolled. All ServiceFabric connections remain private, operating at Layer 2 and Layer 3 with strong authentication and access controls. MCP extends this foundation with programmable policy enforcement that accounts for geographic boundaries, regulatory requirements, data classifications, and network constraints as connections are established and governed.
In this model, sovereignty is not defined solely by where data resides. It is defined by how precisely and intelligently organizations control their movement across an AI ecosystem.
Model-agnostic by design
The AI model landscape is evolving too quickly for infrastructure to be tied to any single vendor or platform. ServiceFabric MCP is intentionally model-agnostic. Whether enterprises deploy agents built on commercial, open-source, or future models, those agents interact with Digital Realty infrastructure through a consistent MCP interface. Digital Realty is not betting on a single model. It is building the foundation that supports many.
The long game: A programmable foundation for AI
ServiceFabric MCP is the first programmable surface of Digital Realty's broader foundation for AI architecture. Over time, architecture is expected to extend beyond networking into space, power, inventory, partner ecosystems, and sovereign deployment patterns.
The endpoint is not agentic networking. It is an agent-ready operating surface for AI infrastructure, helping enterprises and partners design, operate, and govern private AI at scale on a foundation that Digital Realty has been building for years.
