AI is coming to the NBA courts, in a new collaboration between Google Cloud, World Wide Technology and an unnamed NBA franchise.
Under the partnership, the companies plan to develop an AI-powered playbook to "unify" previously siloed data on player performance and health, to better inform game strategy and player workloads.
Team members including coaches, medics and sports scientists would gain access to stats on player performances and trends over time, using it to track potential risks of injury to optimal lineups.
While many of the data points were already available, WWT said in a statement that the new platform responds to the need for interoperability between these systems.
"Without a centralized system or an intuitive way to explore their data, every decision felt like playing defense," WWT said. "Everyone, from coaches to sports scientists to executives, wanted to know what's really moving the needle on wins? How can we get ahead of risk before it turns into an injury? How do my top players compare to all-stars around the league?"
