IBM Think 2026: AI and Quantum Are Converging Infrastructure
via BBN Times
The AI Operating Model: From Projects to a Connected System
IBM's central framing at Think is that most enterprises have invested heavily in AI but are running it at the margins. The shift they are calling for is from a collection of AI projects to an AI Operating Model with four integrated systems (Data, Agents, Automation, Hybrid) designed to work together. The product announcements were organized around this architecture:
- watsonx Orchestrate: Agent control plane that deploys, coordinates, and governs AI agents from any source across the enterprise.
- IBM Bob: Agentic development partner built for enterprise constraints, with security and cost controls built in. Deployed internally across tens of thousands of IBM developers.
- Concert Platform: AI-powered operations platform, now in public preview, that unifies signals across applications, infrastructure, and cost without rip-and-replace.
- watsonx.data + Confluent: Real-time data streaming via Kafka and Flink. The Confluent acquisition addresses what Gartner estimates will cause 60% of agentic AI projects to fail in 2026: lack of AI-ready data.
- watsonx.data GPU-Accelerated SQL: Co-created with NVIDIA. Validated with Nestlé: 83% cost savings and 30x price-performance improvement across 186 countries.
- IBM Sovereign Core: Now generally available. Embeds policy at the infrastructure runtime level. Launch partners: Dell, AMD, and Mistral.
On the implementation side, World Wide Technology (WWT) illustrates what the AI Operating Model looks like in practice, validating agentic AI workflows using IBM Storage Scale in their AI Proving Ground, delivering measurable cost reduction in production environments. What this means for enterprises
- Re-evaluate architecture: prioritize AI-ready data fabrics and agent orchestration layers that can span cloud and on-prem runtimes.
- Invest in governance: policy-enabled runtimes (e.g., Sovereign Core) and built-in cost controls will determine adoption at scale.
- Partner intentionally: quantum value will emerge in domain collaborations (materials, chemistry, energy). Early pilots should pair domain experts, HPC teams, and hybrid workflow engineers.
- Start now, optimize continuously: proofs of value will be domain specific. Early wins compound when infrastructure and tooling are standardized across the enterprise.
