Autonomous Coding Agent Landscape Report

Compare leading autonomous coding agents across common workloads and learn what matters most when choosing the right tool for the task at hand.

The autonomous coding agent market has changed

Devin set the template for fully autonomous software development. Give it a ticket, and it can plan the work, write and test code and return a pull request without a developer sitting alongside it.

But Devin no longer has the field to itself. GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and Factory now handle autonomous and long-running development work of their own. Newer entrants such as Grok Build and Meta Muse Code are expanding the field further.

That makes choosing an autonomous coding agent less about finding the tool with the longest feature list and more about matching the right agent to the right type of work.

Four workloads reshaping autonomous development

WWT's Autonomous Coding Agent Landscape Report examines four areas where autonomous coding agents are becoming particularly relevant:

  1. Autonomous ticket-to-PR delegation. Which agents can take a well-scoped development ticket and return a pull request with minimal developer involvement?
  2. Long-running development tasks. Migrations, large refactors, framework upgrades and test backfills can take agents hours or even days. The report examines how leading platforms approach these workloads and the trade-offs in cost, control and reliability.
  3. Codebase documentation and wikis. AI-generated architecture diagrams, module summaries and repository documentation can help developers understand complex codebases while providing better context for future agent runs.
  4. Team knowledge, playbooks and chat-driven delegation. Reusable instructions and knowledge are turning one-off agent interactions into repeatable development workflows, but how that knowledge is stored can determine how easily teams can move between platforms.

The goal isn't to identify one platform to standardize on indefinitely. It's to help enterprise teams understand which options are best suited to different types of work, what trade-offs come with each approach and what to watch as the market continues to move.

The four architectural patterns across today's coding agents — and where your code goes in each.
