Challenge

Smaller Tribal casinos must provide guests with the same seamless gaming experience as larger resorts. Patrons expect quick access to cash, smooth play on the casino floor, and reliable wireless in hotel and event spaces.

One Tribal casino struggled to meet these expectations due to shortcomings in its network infrastructure. Years of ad hoc fixes had created a patchwork of switches, routers and access points. Without consistent monitoring tools or the ability to troubleshoot remotely, the casino's small IT team had to rush on-site when issues arose. Over time, outages became frequent. 

When the network went down, ATMs would stay offline for days, frustrating guests and stalling gameplay. Ticketing systems would also crash, forcing floor staff to handle payouts manually, which created long lines for guests and pulled staff away from core duties.

Behind the scenes, guest services would lose connectivity, and back-office teams, such as finance, couldn't access shared drives for essential reporting. Wireless in hotel conference rooms was just as unreliable, limiting the casino's ability to host events.

For leadership, the impact was unacceptable. Each outage meant lost revenue, dissatisfied guests and frustrated staff. The network needed more than another temporary fix — it needed a full refresh.   

Solution

We began with a comprehensive network assessment to document the casino's environment and uncover the full scope of its technical debt. The review revealed networking products from more than a dozen manufacturers — including consumer-grade products purchased off the shelf — as well as poor cabling and significant gaps in monitoring. The environment had become so complex that even minor fixes often made problems worse.

To simplify these complexities and support long-term management, we designed a modern architecture standardized on Juniper Networks, the vendor the IT team was most experienced with. We then deployed all new switches and firewalls, cleaning up years of sprawl. 

However, switching and firewalls were only part of the network overhaul. We also implemented Juniper Mist wireless with the Marvis AI assistant, giving IT staff real-time visibility, proactive alerts and remote troubleshooting capabilities. 

With operations consolidated under a single vendor, the small IT team could manage the entire environment from one interface rather than juggling disparate systems.

To ensure long-term success, engineers worked alongside the casino's IT team during deployment, held ongoing follow-up sessions to reinforce key concepts and connected staff to WWT's Labs and Learning platform to deepen their Juniper skills.

If issues do occur, the casino now has escalation options through WWT professional services and Juniper technical support. 

Results

The comprehensive network refresh stabilized operations across the casino, improving experiences for guests and employees. 

Chronic outages that once disrupted business functions have been eliminated. ATMs stay online, back-office departments can access shared drives without interruption, and guest services report consistent connectivity. On the gaming floor, staff no longer face the manual payout scenarios that frustrated patrons and slowed play.

For IT, the change has been transformative. A single dashboard now provides visibility across the network, reducing troubleshooting timelines from weeks to minutes. Remote access enables faster responses, sparing late-night trips on-site, and a lean staff that was once stretched thin now has the confidence and tools to manage a modern network.

Beyond the casino floor, high-speed Wi-Fi replaced dead zones that once disrupted conferences and celebrations. Guests now have reliable connectivity throughout the property, a key advantage for a business competing in gaming and hospitality.  

By standardizing its network on the Juniper platform, the casino has traded chronic disruption for reliability and resilience. IT staff can now manage operations with confidence, while the business can plan for future growth.
