MPLS and Segment Routing

Segment Routing Lab

Service Providers and other large organizations rely on MPLS to deliver mission critical applications and services. Segment Routing accomplishes the same thing as MPLS, but is less complex, extremely robust and can be scaled without any limitations.

MPLS and Segment Routing

Intro to Segment Routing Lab

MPLS has been around for over two decades and is the cornerstone of Service Provider Networks and many enterprise, utility and federal networks. MPLS delivers mission-critical applications and services. Segment Routing has taken the stage to replace MPLS because it accomplishes the same as MPLS but is less complex, extremely robust and can be scaled without limitations. This lab will introduce you to the basics of Segment Routing.

Segment Routing Technical Training

Segment Routing is the latest technology that replaces MPLS and is based on source routing. Segment Routing provides complete control over the forwarding path from the source node by encoding the path in the header of the packet. Segment Routing is implemented using extensions to the native IGP routing protocols, it does not require any additional protocols and removes unnecessary protocols simplifying the network. Segment Routing runs natively on an MPLS or IPv6 data plane and can coexist with LDP, making for a painless migration. A special thank you to Clarence Filsfils and Kris Michielsen from Cisco Systems for providing the original content for the slides.

IP Routing Lab for Optical Engineers

There is a movement in the industry to combine the optical network and the routed network, with Cisco leading the charge. The architecture is known as RON, Routed Optical Networks. With the RON architecture, the services that Optical Engineers are accustomed to delivering within the optical network are now provided via the routed network. Services such as site-to-site traffic demand, path selection, and path protection. With this shift in architecture, there is a growing requirement for optical engineers' expertise to span both optical and routing. This lab is designed to demonstrate how the routed network delivers these services and how to configure a basic RON network using Segment Routing.

Multi-Domain ‌SR-TE Lab‌

Organizations rely on MPLS on multiple platforms to deliver mission-critical applications and services. Segment Routing is the evolution of traditional MPLS, and here we look at SR-MPLS and Traffic Engineering across multiple domains with an SR-PCE (Path Computation Element). Traffic Engineering has been around for many years as RSVP-TE; however, being very cumbersome and complex, it has gained very little popularity with few deployments. Segment Routing Traffic Engineering adds a new dimension to Segment Routing including the ability to perform end-to-end traffic engineering across multiple IGP domains.

Network Transport With Segment Routing Briefing

As modern networks have grown in complexity and scale, they require more stringent tolerances and demanding services, which has spawned the need for a more straightforward and optimized method of transmitting data. And as 5G becomes more widely adopted, such latency standards will only become more desirable. Moving to a next-generation Network Transport based on Segment Routing enables organizational agility and unprecedented control over network path optimization and end-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLA). This briefing is intended to be used for architecture validation, proofs of concepts (POCs), demonstrations, and functional and interoperability testing.

Cisco Segment Routing

Cisco Segment Routing provides complete control over the forwarding paths from the ingress or source network node. Segment Routing is implemented using extensions to the native routing protocols, it does not require any additional protocols and removes unnecessary protocols simplifying the network. Segment routing does not require any path signaling as the per-flow state is maintained at the ingress or source node, removing the state from the network. Segment Routing runs natively on an MPLS or IPv6 data plane and can coexist with your existing LDP network, making for a painless migration. Cisco Segment Routing is supported on the ASR 900, ASR 9000, CRS, NCS 540/560, NCS 5000, NCS 5500, NCS 6000, ASR 1000 and Nexus 9000 product families.
