WebexOne 2026: Key Takeaways for Customer Experience and Contact Center
In this blog
Customer experience and contact center leaders gathered in Austin, TX, from Oct. 5-8 for WebexOne 2026. AI agents took center stage with a theme of "Agentic, realized." Here are our top takeaways from the week.
Agents are picking up the follow-up work
Most customer service still works one interaction at a time. A customer reaches out, the issue gets resolved or it doesn't, and the conversation closes. Any follow-up falls to a person and tends to be slow.
Cisco introduced Dialog on Oct. 7 to change that model. It's an agentic harness for the Webex AI Agent platform. Agents keep working after the conversation ends, coordinating with people, other agents and backend systems until an outcome is reached. Dialog also carries the customer's context across channels, so the relationship stays open and customers don't have to repeat themselves. Cisco expects beta availability in the first quarter of 2027.
Here are some ways Dialog could be applied to common customer experience scenarios:
- Airline seating preferences. A Platinum customer who prefers an aisle seat books a flight and gets a middle seat. No upgrades are available at booking, so the customer calls. An AI agent works in the background so the customer doesn't have to keep checking. When an aisle seat opens, the agent upgrades the seat and notifies the customer, so no follow-up call is needed.
- Medical appointment scheduling. A patient can't find a specialist appointment in the right timeframe. An agent monitors the schedule, books the first opening and sends a confirmation so the patient doesn't have to remember to check back or call again. It can also send appointment reminders, address information, follow-ups, billing information, links to MyChart and lab results.
- Utility outages. During an outage, a background agent reaches out to affected customers on its own. It sends the first outage notice, emergency preparedness tips, periodic status updates and a final resolution notice. Customers get timely information without contacting the utility or checking their account repeatedly.
AI, APIs and automation connect the contact center to its surroundings
AAA was a clear thread through the week: AI, APIs and automation. In the contact center, AI reads sentiment live, APIs put customer history on the agent's screen and automation writes the notes and escalates when sentiment drops.
Cisco extended that idea with announcements that connect agents to the systems where work happens:
- Tool access. A Webex Contact Center server built on MCP, a standard for connecting AI to tools and data, lets outside AI tools and agents plug into the contact center. Admins can also manage flows and monitor live operations in plain language. The tool is currently in beta.
- Agent handoffs. Cisco is adding Agent-to-Agent support, which lets one agent pass work to a specialist agent.
- Your own virtual agents. Cisco is adding connections for voice agents built on NVIDIA Nemotron or Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience.
- Healthcare. Templates for patient authentication and appointment changes connect to Epic and are available now.
Clients rarely run a single AI tool. An agent that can reach the scheduling system, the knowledge base and another vendor's agent is what makes a customer experience agentic.
The pitch is getting practical
Conversations during the week centered on business outcomes. WebexOne featured a variety of customer perspectives built around practical, measurable results. This signals a shift from what AI could do to what customers are already doing with it.
We see the same thing in client conversations. Buyers want a solution that fits a specific need. Cisco's healthcare templates, built around tasks like appointment confirmations and reschedules, are a good example. AI works best when it supports the people and outcomes a business already defines.
The event also made clear that clients need help moving to an agentic future based on the needs of the business. One session we attended showed how a consultative approach can keep AI tied to those needs, which matches how we already work with clients across contact center platforms.
Final thoughts
Our takeaways point to the same place: agents that follow an issue through to the end, connect to the systems around them and take on problems businesses already have. Whatever else AI agents end up doing for customer experience, WebexOne 2026 taught us that those are the pieces worth getting right first.
